► Photon Water, part of Photon Energy Group, has successfully implemented an in-situ containerised system for the removal of PFAS from industrial water for Jihostroj.
► The technology, with an efficiency exceeding 99.5%, also enables 70% water recycling back into the production process, delivering both environmental and economic benefits.
Prague/Amsterdam – 30 April 2025 – Photon Water Technology s.r.o. ("Photon Water"), a subsidiary of Photon Energy N.V. with a registered office in Liberec, Czech Republic (WSE&PSE: PEN) (hereinafter also referred to as the "Company") announces that it has successfully implemented industrial water recycling measures for its client Jihostroj, with the aim of effectively removing PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances). PFAS – also known as the "forever chemicals" – pose a serious environmental and health risk.
“We are proud to collaborate with Jihostroj on addressing water contamination caused by PFAS. Our technology, achieving over 99.5% efficiency, represents a major step forward in protecting the environment and public health. This partnership demonstrates how ecological solutions can contribute to the sustainability of industrial processes. With a 70% water recycling rate back into production, we bring both environmental and economic benefits, helping to support a sustainable future for all,” said Georg Hotar, CEO of Photon Energy Group.
In 2023, the pilot phase of the project took place at the premises of Jihostroj, a traditional Czech manufacturer for both military and civil aviation, located in South Bohemia. The pilot project tested the proposed technology on two types of water: wastewater from electroplating processes and rainwater from the facility grounds. The results were excellent, confirming the high effectiveness of the solution, with efficiency exceeding 99.5%.
Based on these results, Jihostroj and Photon Water signed a contract for the delivery of an on-site containerised system for recycling electroplating wastewater, equipped with PFAS removal technology. An added value of the solution is a 70% water recycling rate back into the production process, making the investment pay off within a few years.
The processing and recycling of rainwater is currently in the permitting phase, with implementation planned for 2025.
Photon Water’s innovative PFAS removal technology is based on a combination of membrane processes and selective ion exchange resins. It efficiently leverages their synergistic cleaning effect on both the permeate and concentrate sides of the process. As a result, the technology not only removes PFAS compounds with over 99.5% efficiency, but also enables a high rate of water reuse in the production cycle. The system is operated by an industrial computer with remote monitoring and a graphical interface integrated into the Photon Matic application for real-time tracking and control.
Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a large group of widely used, industrially manufactured chemicals that accumulate in the human body and environment and have been shown to have adverse health effects. Due to these concerns, PFAS use is increasingly restricted or banned at both EU and national levels. The most heavily contaminated sites include chemical plants, airports, and military bases, but the issue also affects a large number of industrial facilities.
Photon Energy Group delivers solar energy and clean water solutions around the world. Its solar power services are provided by Photon Energy; since its foundation in 2008, Photon Energy has built and commissioned solar power plants with a combined capacity of over 180 MWp and owns power plants with a combined capacity of 130 MWp. It is currently developing projects with a combined capacity of 1 GWp in Australia, Hungary, Poland, Romania and South Africa and provides operations and maintenance services for over 1.1 GWp worldwide.
